Trip Planning Kayak Camping

The following information was made available at the May 21, 2009 SMSKN Membership Meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to have some of the more experienced kayak campers in the club discuss kayak camping so that camping beginners would better know what equipment they needed, and how to camp with minimum environmental impact, while still remaining at least somewhat comfortable and nourished. The meeting was led by Bob Arledge, David Boyle and Mike Marino, all of whom have substantial kayak camping resumes.

Bob drew on his experience to assemble the information in the Camping Discussion outline and the Sample Gear List, both of which are linked to below. Note that the Traditional Impact camping listed as I.A.2.d is no longer acceptable under any circumstances, and is shown only to indicate how much the environmental impact of camping has been reduced in the past decade or so.

For instance, camping on MITA islands is Strict leave-no-trace, except for those few islands with existing privies, campsites, and/or fire rings.

The Sample Gear List is available both as a text document that can be printed and used as a check list, and as an Excel spreadsheet that can be downloaded and used and updated according to the individual campers experiences.
